Virginia Free Divorce Records

Divorce records in Virginia are one of the most accessed documents in the state. With the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, the divorce records are made open for the residents to obtain.

Residents of Virginia request for a copy of divorce records to use it in a number of reasons. The document is used in transactions in the government. Requests such as updating the dependents list and properties would call for a copy of the said file. Without such document, request may be denied. The document is also one of the documents used as reference when conducing genealogy research. It may not be as important as documents such as birth, death and marriage records but it can make major confusions to future generations if it is not updated. Divorcees who wish to marry again would need to secure a copy of their legal divorce certificate to be granted remarriage.

A divorce certificate in Virginia would contain information about the separation of a couple. Details such as the place and the date when the couple legally separated are the highlights of the document. The information that can be found on it is limited only to the basics of the separation; further details about it are kept confidential. One cannot find details about the reason for the divorce and the information about the custody of the children and the properties of the couple. These remain private only to the couple themselves.

A divorce record in Virginia is only available to the public after it reaches 50 years since it was filed. The state only has records which have been registered since 1918. All certificates prior to that year are only available at the county where the couple got separated. One has to pay $12 processing fee in order to have the request processed. Only the divorced couple and their immediate family are allowed to request for the said document. One needs to fill out the request form with the information about the divorce to simplify the retrieval process.

All of the public records of Virginia are being managed at the Department of Health under the Vital statistics office. This includes the divorce records of the residents of Virginia. One has to first check with the said office and see if they can provide the divorce records from there, if not one may need to go to the office of the Clerk of Court in the county where the divorce took place. Mail requests can be sent to the state office but it can take a while before the results of the search can be obtained.

The Internet allows the retrieval of public documents and among the documents that can be requested are divorce records public. By searching for the divorce records online, one can save time and energy since it can be done even at home. One can either do the search on their own for free or pay certain fees to get the needed document easily. Many choose the latter for accuracy and quality of the results.
